It was mile 1150 and I was tired and my legs were aching. It would have been easy to stop, turn around and fly home. But I knew I was cycling from the Michigan/Indiana state line to Key West, Florida for a good cause-to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I also knew that finishing what I started, honoring my commitment and keeping my word was the right thing to do.
A Great Cause
In the end, not only did a college buddy and I ride over 2000 miles in 16 days (125 mile per day avg) but we were also able to raise $10,000 for Muscular Dystrophy, I reaped one of my most memorable rewards; I helped make a difference for a great cause and went home with a huge sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Though this event took place when I was only twenty one, it’s an achievement that clearly defines what I’m all about.
Living by the Rule
Some people call it “The Golden Rule,” while others call it Karma. For me, it’s simply the way I live my life. To me, Always Doing the Right Thing is more than a credo, it’s how I interact with the world around me and it’s a steadfast philosophy that dictates how I approach everything I undertake. It’s a philosophy that I credit for the success of my 37-year marriage to my wife, Paula, and it is a guiding attribute I hope I have instilled in my daughter, Kelsey. Simple, straight forward things like being accountable and acting with integrity have been the key to my success, both personally and in my career.
Born and raised in Northwest Indiana, I am a highly dedicated professional. I keep connected to the business community through my membership in many local civic groups and various charities and I work tirelessly with my clients on a daily basis.
However, when I am not making things happen for my clients, I am a huge sports fan. When I was younger, my mother would say I always had a ball in my hand. I played all the local intramural sports and was an avid runner and cyclist. In fact, it was the annual Little 500 Bike Race held at my alma mater, Indiana University which inspired me to do the fundraising ride for Muscular Dystrophy. Due to two separate knee surgeries, two separate years, I was unable to compete in the actual race, but still contributed as a distance rider and coach for the team.
Today, I enjoy working out at the gym, golfing, cycling, playing tennis, sailing and skiing, but watching my daughter excel in in her life is one of my greatest sources of pride. One thing is certain, no matter what I am doing, I do it with my own brand of enthusiasm, passion and guiding principles.
